| Biography: | One of Georgia’s leading GM’s, the easy going Jobava comes from a chess loving family (his brother is an IM and a former junior champ) and seems to enjoy the lifestyle of a chess professional. He became noticed in the turn of the new millennium, when he rose from a 2430 player to a solid 2550+ GM, and then again when he won the strong Dubai open in 2003.
His true claim to fame however, was a result of superb home preparation: In 2003 at the European club competition in Greece, he beat super-GM Bareev with some fine home-brewed line that lasted all the way to move 34, when his opponent resigned(!). This was no fluke, and in 2004 at the Calvia chess Olympiad, he repeated his ‘homework presentation’ when he took out another huge scalp in GM Grischuk. Played in the FIDE incremental time control, when the latter was pondering his lost position, the young Georgian had more time on his clock than what he started with!
Baadur was having an off form year in 2005, losing quite a few rating points, but he clearly ended the year with a nice bang, taking unshared first at the second edition of the category 17 Samba Cup in Denmark. Naming Botvinik and Alekhin as his chess idols, this ultra sharp player has the promise to produce some of the most exciting games in Corus B. |
