| Biography: | Sometimes nicknamed the ‘Mozart of chess’, wunderkind Magnus started playing competitive chess at the age of 8, and by the age of 13 and 3 months became a grandmaster – a record second only to Karjakin. He is now the world’s youngest grandmaster. The young phenom made his biggest splash in the chess arena even before that, when he won Corus C in 2004 with a resounding +7 score and an over 2700 performance.
After 3 years of exponential rise of Google proportions (500 ELO points between 2002-2005!), it looked like the young Norwegian star has cooled off a bit. He had a string of lukewarm and cold events, dropping 50 points, but any rumors or theories about hitting a plateau crumbled when Magnus regained his form.
He shared first place in the Norwegian championship, finished with a very respectable 8/13 at the European champs, and most recently scorching the field at the strong Byggern event with an amazing 8/9 score, and a 2794 performance rating! He seemed to have been clipping his GM colleagues with great ease, much like we have seen from his previously.
If this form accompanies him into 2006, this could well be the event where he continues his charge towards the 2700 mark. |
