| Biography: | Alexander (‘Big Al’) Genrikhovich is clearly the most experienced and accomplished of the participants in group B. He was born in Lvov, grew up and spent much of his adult life in the Ukraine. Some years ago, he moved to Slovenia where he now makes his home and under whose flag he now plays.
A fearless, uncompromising fighter of the first rank, Alexander was the 1973 World Junior champion. He has won the super strong USSR championships 4(!) times and in the 80’s and 90’s was a frequent competitor at the different stages of the world championships – including the candidates matches in 1983 where he was stopped by a then young Kasparov. He won countless tournaments, including the likes of Tilburg (1981, 1986) Belgrade (1993), and of course a tie for first with Kortchnoi in Hoogovens (Corus’ previous name) in 1984.
He had a rough time in the second half of 2004 and the first few months of 2005, losing 80 ELO points, but a strong showing at the mega-GM HB Global, which he almost won, and a fantastic 9/13 (and a tie for third) at the strong European individual championships started a turnaround. He has already recouped 30 of the lost points, and his chess hunger of late seems rejuvenated. Seeing this veteran who has ‘been there - done that’ combating with the many youngsters in Corus B, should be a genuine treat! |
