| Biography: | Another ‘graduate’ from a previous Corus C group, Kateryna, who will turn 16 just a little before the event, has already made quite a name for herself! Her list of achievements and successes makes for one impressive resume, and her future is well ahead of her. She is a former world under 10 champion, a record breaking WGM at age 12 and 4 months, an IM well on her way in pursuit the GM title and the list goes on and on. She is currently the European individual women’s champion, where she scored a resounding 9/12 and won clear after a playoff.
A product of the super-successful Ukrainian ‘chess city’ of Kramatorsk, which produced several leading Ukrainian players, the young Lahno is a very ambitious player, who made it a point at a young age to mix women’s event along with male competitions (which at one time she played exclusively in for a year). She successfully toggles chess and her schoolwork, making up material when she returns from her trips to tournaments.
Katja, who likes swimming, tennis and long walks with her dog, is a pleasant, giggly young lady, but that stops when she gets to the board! One of her claims to fame is refusing a draw in a blitz game against Viktor Kortchnoi to fight on, and she was 11 at the time! |
