| Biography: | 2005 was a sweet and successful year for the Ukrainian phenom. What started as a roaring victory in Corus B in January (9.5/13), only got better and better. When the music ended, the youngster has amassed over 80(!) rating points so far, and reached his all time high. He is now closer than ever to 2700, a milestone he admitted is a tough barrier to crack.
Equal third place in the GM-saturated European championships with a ‘wowing’ +5 and a clear second in the star-studded Pamplona tournament further proved to all that Sergey is pumped up and ready for more.
It is amazing to think Sergey, who will turn 16 a day before the event, has already been a GM for well over 3 years – time well spent on gaining experience, and improving in giant steps. He may not fulfill his super ambitious hope from age 12 (when he made GM), of becoming a world champ at 16, but the goal remains and he sure seems to be on course.
Karjakin who is still in school, relies on special schedules and tutors to allow him to go to many events and let chess play first fiddle in his life. In chess, he takes advice from top players, including British veteran GM (and 2005 Corus A participant) Nigel Short, for whom Sergey has a lot of respect. Both must know that Corus ’06 is a serious opportunity and test for the prodigy. |
