| Biography: | Another expatriate (originally from Bosnia) who now calls Holland home, and another proud member of the newly crowned European champions team. In the last couple of years, Ivan struggled somewhat in Corus. Two years ago he ended with 5/13, and last year he had a personal horror show with a dismal 3.5/13 and last place – a result he surely must be planning on reversing this time around. A very active player in the chess arena, Sokolov’s rating has been quite erratic – jumping up and down 20+ points from supplement to supplement, but now seems to be on an upswing.
Ivan grew up in Sarajevo, Bosnia, a place with a rich chess culture and first learned how to play at the age of 6, by his father. In 1987 he got his GM title and in the next 10 or so years, rose considerably and showed his true talent and many successes, among them being a member of the silver winning Bosnian team at the 1994 Olympiad, co-winning the Dutch championship (1996), and who can forget his 1999 sensational upset of Kasparov here in Corus! By the turn of the millennium, Ivan has established himself as a regular in the world’s top 20-30, ready and able to inflict damage on even the very best. |
