| Biography: | No words could fairly describe the Topalov of 2005. Yes, he “only” took clear third place in Corus, and yes, his Dortmund was nothing to tell the friends about, but then he ignited like a super rocket.
Veselin shared first place in Linares, where he delivered a special parting gift to the retiring Kasparov, in the shape of a memorable last round victory. Then on home court, came the second super success, when he emerged on top of the M-Tel elite tournament with a 6.5/10 strong showing. But nothing could have prepared anyone for the deluxe demonstration he gave in the San Luis, FIDE championship event, where against the crème de la crème he was all thunder and lightning, reigning terror and taking the world title and clear first place with an unreal 10/14, a point and a half ahead of his nearest rivals! His fearlessness and uncompromising style, combined with full form, left everyone else fighting for second, and crowning the new champ’s end of the year finale.
His next (January) rating, when the smoke clears, should be 2802 - lifting him to second place, and possibly one good event from overtaking Kasparov. What will 2006 bring to the seemingly unstoppable Bulgarian Super GM? Can he continue his amazing run? I don’t anticipate him resting on his Laurels. ‘Toppy’ himself said he would be more enthused about facing Kasparov, but his manager already welcomed match ideas versus either Kramnik or Kasparov. Clearly this sure-to-win-the-next-Chess-Oscar champ is (at least for now!) the man of the hour. |
