| Biography: | | Crimean-born Alexander has already been an established powerhouse GM in Europe when he was enticed by an offer from an American college in Baltimore, to study there and play on their chess team in collegiate events. Since he accepted this offer in 2001 he has been living in the United States. With a nice list of wins in many international tournaments under his belt, Onischuk might be best known for his second place at the World Junior championships in 1995 as well as a similar achievement at the World Youth under 16 in 1991. His wholesome style attracted the attention of none other than ex world champion Anatoly Karpov who for years has been soliciting Alexander’s help and advice as a second. Nowadays, he can be seen returning to his old country to play in team and invitational events but is mostly doing the ‘opens circuit’ in the US. At the Calvia chess Olympiad Alexander firmly held tough on first board for the US, finishing with a solid 7.5/13 and facing some of the world’s best. He is clearly nother heavy favorite in our competition. |
