Location
The Corus Chess Tournament 2004 will be held from 9-25 January 2004 in Wijk aan Zee. The tournament venue is the De Moriaan Community Centre (Dorpsduinen 4, 1949 EG Wijk aan Zee) and the nearbu bar de Zon. Commentators on the games in Grandmaster groups A, B and C will be based in the Corus Chess Pavilion, on the Village Green in Wijk aan Zee (one minute walking from De Moriaan, you will pass the Pavilion on your left side when driving into Wijk aan Zee). Grandmaster groups A, B and C
The Corus Chess Tournament has three main tournaments. They are played according to the 'round robin' system, whereby each competitor plays in turn against every other during the tournament. All three Grandmaster groups have 14 players and start on 10 January.
All rounds begin at 13.30 hours, except for the last round on 25 January, which begins at 12.30 hours (Grandmaster Group C starts at 11.30 hours. There are rest days on 12, 16 and 21 January. The move-rate in the Grandmaster groups A, B and C is 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by 20 moves in 1 hour.
(Only for the A- and B-group): If a game is still not finished after 6 hours of play, both players are given an extra half hour to finish the game.

(Fire department) Prescriptions
Please notice that the doors to the playing hall can be closed occasionally, in case of a large crowd.
The use of mobile phones, alcoholic beverages and smoking in the playing hall are strictly prohibited!

Fours and Tens competitions
Over 1300 chess players from different countries will be taking part in the Fours and Tens competitions. The Weekend Fours will be played from 9-11 January and the Day Fours from 13-15 January. The Tens will take place between 16 and 25 January. The Weekend Fours and the Tens competitions were already fully subscribed by the end of November.

Rapid Chess Tournament
On Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January a lightning chess tournament will be held in the Heliomare Rehabilitation Centre. In this tournament, time for thinking is limited to 30 minutes per person per game.

SPECIAL GROUPS
A variety of special competitions are held during the Corus Chess Tournament. The following is a non-limitative summary of those events, and further information on the participants is available from the press service.

Parliamentary Chess Championship
On 17 and 18 January a group of Members of the Upper and Lower Houses of the Dutch Parliament will take part in the Parliamentary Chess Championship.

Ex-Parliamentarians
On 17 and 18 January several former Members of Parliament will be competing in their own tournament.

Championship of the Provincial Council
For the second time in the history of the Corus Chess Tournament, members of the Provincial Council will compete for the Championship of the Provincial Council. The dates are 17 and 18 January.

Dutch Chess Championship for JournalistsFrom 9-11 January, the 15th Dutch Chess Championship for Journalists will be held in De Moriaan.

PeRs Group
This tournament will be held during the first weekend. Several journalists and PR representatives will compete on 10 and 11 January for the so-called 'wobble trophy'. All participants in this contact group are directly or indirectly connected to Corus.

IJmond Trophy
Chess teams drawn from local councils in the IJmond area will be competing for this trophy. The competition will take place during the second weekend (16-18 January).

Customer Group
The Customer Group has been a regular feature of the tournament programme ever since the fiftieth tournament. They will be competing on 10 and 11 January for the traditional challenge prize - a bicycle.

Works Council Tournament
This will be the sixth time a tournament has been organised for members of the Corus Works Council - to be held on 10 January.

Girls' Tournament
From 9-11 January there will again be a Girls' Tournament in the De Moriaan Centre. Competition director: Monique van de Griendt.

Youth Simultaneous
The open Youth Simultaneous matches for children from the region are a regular tradition at the Corus Chess Tournament. To be played this year on Wednesday 21 January.

NEW EVENTS
For the 2004 edition of the CCT, several new events are scheduled. We'll mention them here for you:

A2-Tournament
Aysel van Waveren from co-sponsor A2 came up with the idea to organize an individual chess tournament for children of both elementary school and high school in the region of Beverwijk. The event will take place on 21 and 24 January in the Corus Chess Pavilion.

Superchess
This new variation of the famous game will be demonstrated on 21 January, while the Dutch Championship Superchess will take place on 24 January.

Holland - ROW
On 16 January several journalists from Holland will compete against a team of journalists from abroad in the Corus Chess Pavilion. The event will start in the early evening.

Man/Woman/Team of the year competition
Jan Bey, chief editor of the popular website 'www.schakers.info' has organized this competition for the first time. The prize giving for the best Dutch Chess Players in 2003 will take place in the Corus Chess Pavilion, starting in the early evening of 16 January.

Live Chess on the Radio
Hans Böhm will lead a life performance on the Dutch radio in the evening of 21 January (starting 20:00 hours) in the Corus Chess Pavilion. International grandmaster John van der Wiel will play against the Dutch listeners. The game will start after the move 21. Qg7!?, based on the famous Wijk aan Zee games Ivanchuk-Shirov (1996) and Ponomariov-Shirov (2003). The game can also be followed on both Internet and Dutch Teletekst.

Commentary
The commentary on each round begins at 2.30 p.m. (in the weekends at 2.00 p.m.) On Sunday 26 January it will begin at 1 p.m. During the weekends, two experts will give a continuous commentary. The schedule of commentators can be found elsewhere in News

Closing of the Corus Chess Tournament 2004
The official closing of the tournament will begin on 25 January in the Corus Chess Pavilion at 6 p.m. In accordance with long tradition, pea soup will be served during the final dinner. The awarding of prizes to the Grandmaster groups recipients will commence at 7.45 p.m.

Corus Prize
The winner of Grandmaster group A will receive a replica of the tournament trophy in addition to the cash prize.

Participants who achieve their first grand master result during the tournament will receive a souvenir of the occasion and a cash prize.

Audience Prize
This 250 EURO prize will be awarded each day for the most elegant or most interesting game in the Grandmaster groups. The 'winning' game will be decided by the audience during the commentary session.
